Ananuri Fortress

Ananuri Fortress
Ananuri Fortress is one of Georgia’s most photogenic and historic sites, located on the shores of the Zhinvali Reservoir along the historic Georgian Military Highway. Once the residence of the Dukes of Aragvi in the 17th century, it still stands impressively tall. The complex consists of an upper fortress with towers and walls, and a lower courtyard featuring the Churches of the Virgin and of the Savior. The best-preserved four-sided “Shevardo” Tower, with a carved cross relief on its façade, is especially notable. Inside, you can see a bath, a water reservoir, and tunnels. In 2007, Ananuri was added to UNESCO’s Tentative List. In summer, the emerald waters and green mountains give the fortress a unique charm.
