Samtavro Monastery

Samtavro Monastery
Samtavro Monastery is located in the historic town of Mtskheta, about 25 km from Tbilisi. It is one of Georgia’s important religious and cultural monuments. According to tradition, Saint Nino lived and preached here, playing a major role in the spread of Christianity in Georgia. The complex includes the main 11th-century church, the small Church of Saint Nino, a bell tower and a fortified enclosure. The monastery is also home to the tombs of King Mirian III and Queen Nana, the first Georgian rulers to adopt Christianity. Samtavro is particularly interesting for its ancient architecture, historical importance and continuing monastic life.
