Khertvisi Fortress
Khertvisi Fortress is one of Georgia’s best-known and best-preserved medieval fortresses. It stands on a rocky promontory at the confluence of the Mtkvari and Paravani rivers, near Aspindza in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region. The history of Khertvisi goes back many centuries, and the fortress is mentioned in written sources as early as the 12th century. Over the centuries, it was rebuilt and strengthened several times. Its massive defensive walls, towers and dramatic location make Khertvisi an important historical landmark of southern Georgia. The fortress is also located near the famous cave-monastery complex of Vardzia and is included in popular tourist routes through the region.
