Racha-Lechkhumi and Lower Svaneti is a mountainous region in northwestern Georgia, known for its stunning landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and unique traditions. It consists of three historical-geographic areas:
Racha – Famous for its wine, particularly the semi-sweet Khvanchkara, and scenic mountain valleys.
Lechkhumi – Known for its gold mines and the beautiful Lajanuri Reservoir.
Lower Svaneti – Part of the greater Svaneti region, famous for its medieval defensive towers and the Lentekhi district.
Key Features:
Nature: The region is home to the Caucasus Mountains, deep gorges, and rivers like the Rioni.
Culture: Svaneti has a distinct culture with its own language (Svan) and ancient traditions.
Landmarks:
Nikortsminda Cathedral (11th century) – A UNESCO-listed medieval church in Racha.
Shaori Reservoir – A picturesque lake in the mountains.
Ushguli (part of Upper Svaneti, nearby) – One of Europe’s highest continuously inhabited villages.
Administrative Center:
Ambrolauri is the capital of the region.
Tourism:
Popular for trekking, skiing (in winter), and cultural tourism.
The region is less touristy than Upper Svaneti but offers equally breathtaking views.
