Zhinvali Water Reservoir is one of Georgia’s most scenic artificial lakes, located on the Aragvi River about 70 km from Tbilisi. It was created following the construction of the Zhinvali Hydroelectric Power Station and is surrounded by the green mountains of the Greater Caucasus. Its turquoise-blue waters, dramatic mountain scenery and winding shoreline make it a popular stop on the road to Kazbegi and other attractions of northern Georgia. Nearby, the famous Ananuri Fortress offers spectacular views over the reservoir and surrounding landscape.
If you need a quick nature fix without leaving Tbilisi, Lisi Lake is the answer. Just a 15-minute drive from the city center, this rocky oasis feels like a hidden escape. I love how the blue water contrasts with the dry, hilly landscape – it almost looks like a seaside resort. Pack your sneakers – the 3-km loop is perfect for a sunset jog or a lazy stroll. In summer, the lake warms up nicely for swimming, and there’s a sandy beach with loungers. Grab a coffee at the lakeside café, watch the paddleboarders, or just breathe in the fresh air. Kids will love the playgrounds, and everyone can enjoy the free entry. Tip: Visit on a weekday to avoid crowds. Lisi isn’t wild nature, but it’s a breath of fresh air – literally.
Shaori Reservoir is a serene man‑made lake framed by rolling green hills and dense forests. Created by damming the Shaori River, this calm water body is famous for its mirrored surface, reflecting the sky, clouds, and surrounding peaks. Unlike crowded tourist spots, it offers pure tranquility—ideal for kayaking, fishing, or simply enjoying a quiet picnic. A unique floating wooden walkway lets visitors stroll almost on the water. In autumn, the hills explode in shades of gold and red, making the scenery unforgettable. Whether you seek solitude or a gentle nature escape, Shaorskoye Reservoir is Racha’s best‑kept secret, waiting to mesmerize you with its untouched beauty.
The Sion Reservoir (Lake of Sion, Sea of Sion) is located 75 km from Tbilisi (Mtskheta region, Eastern Georgia‑Mtianeti). It was established in 1963 on the Iori River; the area is 12.8 km2, the depth is up to 67 m, and the volume is over 325 million m3. The reservoir regulates the flow of the river, provides irrigation for fields and the operation of small hydroelectric power plants. The maximum water level is in July, the minimum is in March. The water temperature ranges from 2.7 C (February) to 23-24 C (August). The place is popular for fishing, swimming, boating, picnics and hiking trails. The shores are picturesque: The left slope is gentle, the right is steep and rocky, the top is covered with deciduous forest.
