Description
Darial Monastery (Monastery of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel) – one of Georgia’s most breathtaking sights, perched on a cliff in the Darial Gorge right at the Russian border, 1,300 meters high. Though young (construction began in 2005), its architecture looks ancient. The main church is styled after the 11th‑century Nikortsminda Cathedral, with hand‑carved stone, mosaics, and wrought iron details made by the monks. But the real magic is the location: at the narrowest point of the gorge, squeezed by 1,000‑meter vertical cliffs, with the roaring Terek River far below. This is the very spot immortalized by Pushkin and Lermontov. Above the monastery, the legendary Tamara’s Castle stands on a rock.
